David W. Crowther
1952-1979
Officer David Crowther was born in Boise, Idaho and raised in Portland. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970. While attending Mt Hood Community College and Willamette University he worked as a hospital aid, lumber mill worker, park recreation leader and a security guard. He was a Corvallis police officer from 1976 to 1977.
He was appointed to the Bureau on December 7, 1977 at the age of 25. He worked in all three precincts, Traffic and Special Investigations Divisions.
The Incident
On December 12, 1979 around 9:00 pm, officer Crowther and his Narcotics Detail Team had a search warrant to serve at the Outsiders Motorcycle Club at 9014 Lombard Street. Not getting a response from the inhabitants, the team began forcing the front door. After a few minutes they were able to get the door partially open and Crowther squeezed through and immediately received a shotgun blast to his head. He died fifteen days later.
The shooter was charged with murder and found guilty of manslaughter.
Officer Crowther was 27 and single.
