James C. Gill
1877-1915
Originally from Indiana, he had worked in Portland as a surveyor and minerals assayer.
Appointed in February, 1908, he was a member of the day shift and previously had been detailed to the Women’s Protective Division under Lola Baldwin.
He was commended by Chief Clark and Captain Moore as having a good record with the department.
The Incident
At 10:00 am on November 30, 1915, patrolman Gill was inside the Hibernia Hall at 340 Russell, when he accidentally dropped his automatic pistol. The gun discharged, hitting Gill in the chest. He called for help, picked up his pistol and staggered several feet before collapsing. The building custodian responded to him but could do nothing to save the officer.
Gill was 38 and survived by his wife and daughter.
