John J. McCarthy
1877-1916
His parent emigrated from Ireland and McCarthy was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He moved to Portland around 1903 and boarded with the family of Edward Gee, 720 Corbett Street for 13 years. Before joining the Police Bureau he had been working as a mechanic.
Appointed in January, 1911, he worked as a traffic patrolman.
The Incident
Officer McCarthy, 39 years old, died as the result of his vehicle being struck by the Woodstock street car around 9:00 pm on July 21, 1916. He had been traveling north on Eighth street when he met up with the streetcar at Hawthorn.
McCarthy was 39 and was to have been married for the first time, just ten days later.
