Robert R. Ferron
1938-1964
Officer Robert Ferron was born in Deadwood, South Dakota and moved to Portland four years later. He had been a member of the Marine Corps, Engineer Battalion.
He was appointed to the Bureau on February 23, 1961 at the age of 22. After completing his probation he started in Central Precinct and in October 1963 was assigned to the Vice Division.
The Incident
In the mid-afternoon of May 23, 1964, Officer Ferron was driving an unmarked vehicle. He was headed out of town on the Baldock Freeway (I-5 between 405 and the Terwilliger curves), when the car went out of control just south of Corbett. The car left the road, rolled several times, traveling over 600 feet and ejected the officer. Ferron was taken to the hospital where he died four hours later.
Officer Ferron was 25 and survived by his wife and daughter.
